VARIOUS PENALTY SHOOT-OUT RECORDS
The team first shooting has won 7 of the 16 shoot-outs, or 43.75% of them.
Only two of the 16 shoot-outs have needed extra penalties. The West Germany -
France clash in 1982 needed one extra round of penalties, so did the Sweden -
Romania match in 1994.
Sergio Goycoechea of Argentina has saved the most penalties in total. He
saved three against Yugoslavia in the quarterfinal in 1990 and two more in
the semifinal against Italy, making his total to five. Claudio Taffarel of
Brazil has also saved five, but two of them went over the crossbar, both in
the final of 1994. He saved two more against Holland in the semifinal in
1998. Harald Schumacher of West Germany is in third with four saves, with two
against both France (1982) and Mexico (1986).
No player has scored in three penalty shoot-outs. But thirteen players have
