"Micho reminds me of Franz Beckenbauer." With these words, José Maria
Aguilar, President of Buenos Aires giants River Plate, has said all that
needs to be said about Martin 'Micho' Demichelis. The player is rated for his
aerial strength, powerful tackling, excellent positional sense and tactical
intelligence, but above all for an easy and fluid command of the game, the
main reason for the admiring comparison with the Kaiser
At home in Argentina, Demichelis' nickname is Mariscal (Marshall), after
Roberto Perfumo, the best and most elegant Argentine defender of the Sixties
and Seventies. Demichelis has enjoyed a spectacular couple of years in South
America and has now chosen to continue his career development in Europe at
Bayern.
The player's meteoric rise began in September 2001, as the then 20 year-old
celebrated his first division debut and swiftly made a place in the River
Plate starting line-up his own. League titles followed in 2002 and 2003, and
the defender now aims to carry on in Europe where he left off at home.
"Things have always happened quickly where I'm concerned," Bayern's new
number six observed, "but I'm keeping both feet firmly on the ground." The
level-headed approach is highly valued at his new club. "He's just like Santa
Cruz, likeable, polite and well brought up. Simply a good guy," says Karl
Heinz Rummenigge of "the target we always wanted."
Bayern have acquired not merely an outstanding footballer but also a proven
team player. "I'll always give everything I've got in whatever position I'm
asked to play," the Mariscal says with determination. And, he concludes,
"There's no doubt that playing for Bayern is the highlight of my career."
