"Frowning in Vain (枉凝眉)"
Lyricist: Cao Xueqin
Composer: Wang Liping
Original Singer: Chen Li
One is an immortal flower from paradise
The other, flawless jade of perfect grace
If no destined bond was ever meant to be
Why in this life did fate bring him to me?
If a destined bond was truly meant to be
Why did our heartfelt longings fade into nothing?
啊…
Ah...
One in vain sighs with sorrow
The other, worn by fruitless longing
One is the moon reflected in water
The other, a flower seen in a mirror
How many teardrops can these eyes hold?
How could they flow from autumn to winter's end
From spring into summer?
啊…
Ah...

Background Note: The Mythical Bond Between the Flower and the Jade
This song, "Frowning in Vain," is the main theme of the classic Chinese masterpiece Dream of the Red Chamber. It depicts the tragic, predestined love between the two protagonists, Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu.
In their celestial past lives, Baoyu was a divine attendant who nurtured a withered plant—the Crimson Pearl Grass (Daiyu)—with sweet dew. To repay this kindness, the grass vowed to be reborn as a human and "repay him with a lifetime of tears."
The Immortal Flower: Refers to Lin Daiyu, representing her fragile beauty and spiritual nature.
The Flawless Jade: Refers to Jia Baoyu, who was born with a magical jade in his mouth, symbolizing his noble but burdened soul.
Thus, the "immortal flower from paradise" and the "flawless jade" are not mere fantasy imagery—they represent a predestined tragedy. Their meeting is not for union, but for repayment through tears: a lifetime of weeping to settle a debt of grace from a previous existence.
