报告内容:
We recently developed, with Olympus Engineering Co. Ltd., advanced optical microscopy, which has real atomic/molecular resolution in z-direction. Then, we can directly observe growing ends of ubiquitous molecular layers (so called elementary steps) on ice crystal surfaces. My first topic is surface melting of ice that occurs even below melting point (0 degree C) By our advanced optical microscopy, we recently found that two types of quasi-liquid layers, which show different morphologies, appear on ice crystal surfaces even below 0 degree C. My second topic is space experiment carried out on 2008 in the international space station. We will demonstrate how significantly buoyancy convection affects the growth of ice crystal. In my talk, I will show you many movies of ice crystal growth. I hope every one enjoy these movies.
