Results of UEFA's Jubilee poll to find the top 50 European players of the past 50 years will begin next week, with Player No50 and working gradually towards Player No1, which will be announced in the spring.
Nearly 7,000,000 votes
A total of 134,796 people all over the world voted for their favourite European 50 players, ten from each decade of UEFA's existence, making the overall number of votes cast 6,739,800.
Close race
The top four players gained more than 100,000 votes each, with fewer than 1,000 votes separating the top two. In the top 50, there are at least eight players from each decade, with every playing position and many different countries represented. Today we continue to look at some of the famous names that just missed out.
Prolific Blokhin
Player No80 from the list of 250 nominees is Oleh Blokhin, who was prolific for club and country. He found the net in two UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final victories for FC Dynamo Kviv, scored 35 goals in 101 international appearances for the Soviet Union, and received 27,395 votes.
Butrague?o and Bergkamp
At No79, and with 27,411 votes, is Real Madrid CF great Emilio Butrague?o, who helped the Spanish giants to five successive league titles between 1986 and 1990 and two UEFA Cup triumphs. Arsenal FC's Dennis Bergkamp, who scored 36 goals for the Netherlands, is No 78, having helped AFC Ajax to Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Cup successes. He has since gone on to win the English league and FA Cup double twice with Arsenal, and earned 27,745 votes.
Pride of Bulgaria
One place above Bergkamp, with 28,006 votes, is FC Barcelona legend Hristo Stoitchkov, who helped Bulgaria to the semi-finals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup and won the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1992, in addition to the UEFA Cup and five Primera División titles.
Papin and Hierro
Jean-Pierre Papin finished in 76th place with 28,044 votes, having collected 30 goals in 54 games for France. He also won a UEFA Cup with FC Bayern München, four French league titles and two Italian championships. Fernando Hierro, another Madrid legend, is No75 with 28,612 votes. Hierro scored 29 goals in 89 games for Spain, a remarkable record for a defender, and lifted three UEFA Champions League trophies, as well as five Spanish league titles.
Breitner and Davids
West Germany great Paul Breitner, a key member of the side that won the 1972 UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup two years later, is No74 with 29,050 votes. Edgar Davids, a Champions League winner with Ajax in 1995 who was a key member of a successful Juventus FC side until joining FC Barcelona this week, collected 29,086 votes to be No 73.
Gascoigne and Netto
One of English football's most mercurial talents, Paul Gascoigne is No72 with 29,749 votes, having won trophies in England and Scotland with Tottenham Hotspur FC and Rangers FC respectively and also played for S.S. Lazio. Igor Netto, who made 58 appearances in the Soviet Union's midfield and was a key member of the team which clinched the inaugural European Championship in 1960, is No71 with 29,750 votes to his name.
