Sebastian Deisler's 2002-3 was not about appearances, assists and goals but
regaining full fitness. And in these terms, the player can be satisfied with
his first season at Bayern.
Deisler came to Munich in summer 2002 plagued by a serious knee injury, but
the club insisted he would be given as long he needed to recover. Finally, on
4 February 2003, fans and officials alike shared the player's delight as he
pulled on a Bayern shirt in anger for the first time, 262 days after joining
the Bavarian giants.
By the end of the season, the midfielder had amassed eight Bundesliga
appearances, and although the total was low, the footballing quality was
high. "As a player, he can do things no-one else in Germany can do,"
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge enthused after a series of displays brimming with
promise.
The once in a generation talent now knows the time has come to deliver. Uli
Hoeness knows it too: "The honeymoon is over, the knee's not a problem now,"
the general manager commented, expecting Deisler to take a major step forward
this term and assume a leading role within the team. "But he'll need to be
more extrovert for that," Rummenigge warned
Deisler's progress has been impeded by an injury-ridden two years, but now
the club's number 26 is passionately keen to show off his enormous range of
skills again. "It'll be back to the good old days, let nobody be in any doubt
about that," he says defiantly.
