Michael Rensing swiftly made a name for himself after Bayern's successful
German Youth Cup campaign in July 2002. "I'm aiming to take over from Olli
Kahn in four years," the young keeper said. But words that appeared impudent
at the time now seem more and more like prophecy.
After a season in goal for the Bayern reserves, Rensing stepped up to the
role of Kahn's deputy in July 2003. The Germany Under-19 keeper, who is 1.87
metres tall and weighs 86 kilograms, will continue in the third division
south "to make sure he gets match practice," reserve coach Hermann Gerland
comments.
Bayern are aware of the potential gem in their possession. Reserve and Junior
Team boss Werner Kern describes Rensing as "the goalkeeping talent of the
decade," while Uli Hoeness is expecting great things from the high school
student, who joined Bayern from TuS Lingen in 2000: "He's the best keeper
we've had in the reserves for many a year."
Rensing is one of the mainstays of the Germany youth side. "He's got
everything, outstanding reflexes, he's good on crosses and he's a team
player," Germany coach Horst Hrubesch enthuses, "if it was me, I'd play him
in the Bundesliga without a moment's hesitation. Michael could be Kahn's
successor." Kahn intends to hang up his gloves in 2006. By then, Rensing will
be all of 22 years old.
