Field assistants needed for panda conservation research since May 2007 in Wolong Nature Reserve, Sichuan
1-2 field assistant is needed to help a graduate student with an interdisciplinary research project on studying the impacts of tourism development on panda habitat and panda use of their habitat in Wolong Nature Reserve, Sichuan, China. Work will involve conducting social surveys and/or field surveys.
Specifically, work consists of one or some of the following activities: conducting tourist surveys at a couple of fixed locations, interview tourists at various other locations, survey human-use on trails, study forest structure in mountains, search panda signs in forests, and field/survey data input and preliminary analyses.
If you plan to apply for this position it is important that you are willing to stay in Wolong for the whole period of the study. You should be genuinely interested in a field experience and you should enjoy learning about social survey and experiencing field work. You have to be open and like to talk with different people (locals, tourists, Chinese, and foreigners of different ages and genders). If you do not enjoy communication, nature, and hiking this experience is not right for you.
The whole study is planned to start on May 1st and will probably go on until mid-October, however, a working period to fit your own schedule can be arranged. A monthly salary of 1500-2000 RMB will be offered, depending on the length of work. All expenses while in the reserve and travel cost (airfare, bus, etc.) to and from Wolong will be covered. Knowledge of basic conversational English is required. Knowledge/background in the following majors will be favored but not required: biology, sociology, geology, geography, environmental science and Japanese language.
If you are interested in this position, please send your resume with two references and a letter of introduction (your background, your interest, and why you think you are a good candidate for this position) to Wei Liu, liuwei3@msu.edu . It’s preferred that your resume and letter are written in English, but Chinese will be accepted.
