About NTT DoCoMo
Supplying Future Personal Telecommunication Technologies from Asia
NTT DoCoMo has been a leader in the development of mobile communication
technologies and services since our foundation in July 1992. We introduced
the i-mode mobile Internet service in February 1999, and started the third
generation (3G) mobile communication service called IMT-2000 using W-CDMA
technology in October 2001.
Support for our leading technologies comes from the latest research and
development capabilities of our R&D Center in Yokosuka Research Park in
Japan. For example, this Center has already achieved over 100Mbps outdoor
wireless data transmission needed for the realization of fourth generation
(4G) mobile communication technologies.
However, we believe that a global R&D perspective is essential to
further development of mobile and personal communication technologies.
Accordingly, NTT DoCoMo already has one overseas laboratory in the U.S.A.
(San Jose) and another in Europe (Munich, Germany). Now, we have
established the new DoCoMo Beijing Communications Laboratories Co., Ltd. in
Beijing, China, to strengthen technological contributions from Asia.
The Roles of DoCoMo Beijing Communications Laboratories
The new laboratories emphasise advanced research in high speed and high
volume wireless transmission technologies, wireless systems, and basic
technologies for a new approach to mobile communication. The overall
purpose of their foundation is to enhance the potential of future mobile
and personal communication technologies in 4G and beyond.
People around the world are looking to China for indications of trends
in marketing, research and development. China has the largest number of
mobile phone subscribers in the world and will maintain its status as a
market with significant potential. Additionally, China is bringing great
resources to research and development in mobile communication technologies.
A government-led project in 4G mobile communication technologies has been
launched, in addition to present research in 3G technologies. Zhongguancun
in Beijing, often called the Silicon Valley of China, is becoming an
important area of activity, due to the number of universities and
laboratories engaged in related research and the high calibre of human
resources.
DoCoMo Beijing Labs were founded to establish a stronger partnership
with China through research activities in this advantageous location. We
believe that China and NTT DoCoMo can open a new era through research
cooperation in China. Mutual benefit can be gained from the experience and
know-how of NTT DoCoMo, combined with the influence of China in the field
of mobile communication.
