The group’s current focus includes speech recognition to enable computers to facilitate access to data, help create content, and perform tasks; speech synthesis to enable computers to speak with a human-sounding voice, to respond and provide information, and to read; and spoken-document retrieval and processing to enrich communication between people.
Roles & Responsibilities
MSRA Speech Group is looking for an Intern candidate for a 6 month project on video recommendation. The student will engage in comparative research between content-based recommendation (using speech and acoustic analysis) and collaborative filtering recommendation for the Internet video domain. The research is targeted at a number of real Microsoft properties, including MSN Video and MSN Soapbox.
Required Qualifications:

1. The student should have considerable research expertise in the areas of machine learning and statistical processing.
2. Experience with either natural language processing or speech recognition is also required.
3. The student should be fluent in C++ and C# languages.
4. Skills in scripting languages such as perl, python, and linux shell script will be viewed favorably.

The Multimodal User Interface Group at MSR Asia is exploring research in advanced natural user interface technologies. Natural communication with machines or with other people via machines is critical to bringing the benefits of networked computers to the mass market. A computer's user interface must cater to the human senses of sight, sound, and touch, which are used to navigate physical surroundings. New technologies are emerging that can support human-machine communications with features that are natural to humans. The challenge is learning how to use these still imperfect technologies to transcend the benefits of a single modality.

The group's research is used across the realm of communications applications including video broadcast, instant messaging, video conferencing, multi-view video, and peer-to-peer video streaming. The group's innovations have made an impact on a number of Microsoft products and technologies.

You will take one or more roles of the following:
1. Research in optimized algorithm in P2P overlay and P2P streaming.
2. Implement the optimized overlay and streaming algorithm.
3. Take part in the implementation of a high-quality, large-scale P2P streaming system.
Required Qualifications:
1. MS in Computer Science or any related technical field;
2. Good programming skills in C++, VC, Windows SDK, Network;
3. Research or development experience in P2P is a plus;
4. Development experience in DShow is a plus;
5. Knowledge of Shell, Perl, or Python is a plus;
