OFFICIAL: Inter Goalkeeper Francesco Toldo Retires From Football
Inter goalkeeper Francesco Toldo has called time on his career following 20 years as a professional.
The Italian confirmed he will hang up his gloves and retire from played football, but said he would continue to work behind the scenes at the club.
"I have decided. I will stop playing. I will stop playing football. This is the first time I have said this officially, and so I am emotional," he told the club's official website.
"My holidays this year will be very long in the sense that I will stop playing football.
"But, despite this, I will continue to stay withing the club and co-operate with Inter Campus, seeking to increase the club's high image."
Toldo played second fiddle to Julio Cesar since his arrival five years ago, but he insists he was happy to take a step back and remain with the club, rather than leave.
"I think that the group has been correct with regards to everyone and honest with each other," he added.
"As a result victories started to arrive and they have done the environment well.
"Therefore the personal situations were cast aside for the best of the group."
The 38-year-old, at the club since 2001, said he would not organise a farewell match.
"No, I will not have one," he concluded.
Toldo began his career with Milan as a youth in 1987 and was promoted to the first team three years later, but he never played and was loaned out, having different spells with Verona, Trento and Ravenna.
He joined Fiorentina in 1993, before leaving for Inter eight years later.
