Personal summary:
Going to Lingshan with 清华山野协会 is the first time I’ve been camping in China, and I could not have asked for a better team and better place. For me, hiking brings focus and a peace of mind because when I’m hiking, I can’t think of anything else. I need to focus on one step after another and pay attention to my surroundings, for my own safety and enjoyment. I don’t have time to think about all the homework I need to do or the essays I need to write once I get back to the college. Instead, my mind is focused on the present. It’s gives me a type of meditative flow.
I had so much fun in these two days, saw beautiful views and nature, stepped on the 长城 for the first time in about 15 years, and learned a lot from my amazing teammates. It was interesting to see differences in backpacking team methods in China vs the US. In the US I usually backpack solo or with one or two other friends, and have a lightweight philosophy: bring little, go far and go fast. Tsinghua’s mountaineering club feels much more prepared, ready for all sorts of circumstances. As it result, we have to carry a lot more things, but it also feels safer, more secure, and more methodological. Being in a team also has extra things to think about, like choosing to descend earlier in consideration of teammates, and always making sure that everyone is feeling good. I’m grateful for our veteran team member 修棣 for bringing up a few things we have to consider as a part of a team - e.g. to tie our waist buckles, which is slowly becoming a good habit for me. On this trip I really felt like we were all here to take care of each other, and we really felt like a family. I really wish we had time at night to play cards or mafia and get to know each other more, but it was really too cold so we all retreated to our own tents. Maybe next time!
A big thanks to our team leader 小野马, from you I see the responsibility and dedication of what it means to lead a team. I wouldn’t be able to tell it was your first time, but I was happy to experience it with you. Also thanks to my tent mates 涵哥, 麓宁, for the laughs, porridge, companionship, the stories. Sorry I fell asleep, but let’s all learn about 麓宁’s fascinating love life another day, hehe. 天一, thanks for the fun electric scooter ride back on campus (it was definitely an ab workout for me). 唐唐, thank you for the amazing photos, they are absolutely beautiful.
Team medic summary
曹哥and I were prepared and brought a lot of different medicines for people (thanks for taking more of the weight, 曹哥!) but luckily nothing too crazy happened. 俊广 had both legs cramped but still walked uphill - I felt at this moment he was really brave and tough! - and 修棣 and I helped him massage it a little bit. Next time as team doctor, I should try to pay more attention to the teammates and treat them preventatively - for example, I didn’t realize that so many people’s backs hurt from the weight of the bags, and could have helped folks out in advance!
This is an experience I won’t soon forget. Thank you, love you all <3
