In the 2008 Beijing Games, 17% of cyclists and 19% of swimmers had asthma. These Olympic athletes captured 29% and 33% of the medals in those sports, respectively.
The rate of asthma in Olympic athletes is much higher than in the general population. In the United States, 8.3 percent of Americans have asthma, but 16.5 percent of Olympic athletes have asthma. And studies have shown it to be as high as 55 percent!
We found that 117 (16.7%) of the 699 US athletes who participated in the Atlanta Summer Olympic Games had a history of asthma, took asthma medications, or both.
